Security Tightened Across New York Ahead of Trump’s NBA Finals Appearance
The visit led authorities to establish a large security zone around Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, resulting in road closures and restrictions on pedestrian access. A previously planned watch party at the arena was canceled because of the security arrangements.
Meanwhile, Zohran Mamdani, who was also expected to attend the game, organized an alternative public watch event at Bryant Park that could accommodate up to 5,000 fans.
According to reports, the New York Police Department designated a "secure area" surrounding the arena, with entry limited to ticket holders passing through five checkpoints operated jointly by police and the United States Secret Service. Images shared online showed lengthy lines of spectators waiting to enter.
The visit reportedly marks the first time a sitting US president has attended an NBA Finals game.
Conservative commentator Ann Coulter criticized the decision, arguing that the security operation would inconvenience thousands of attendees, require substantial public resources, and create traffic disruptions. She described the visit as "selfish, narcissistic" in comments posted on social media.
Separately, the North American Aerospace Defense Command reported more than 10 violations of restricted airspace over New York and New Jersey during the previous three days, underscoring heightened security concerns surrounding the presidential trip.
On the court, the New York Knicks entered Game 3 holding a 2-0 lead in the championship series against the San Antonio Spurs. Trump was expected to return to Washington after the game concluded.
